What The Flocke? Knut Wants To Know

Monday, January 28th, 2008

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

Couldn’t help it. With a name like Flocke, you’re just gonna have to get use to the puns. If you don’t know who I’m talking about — it’s the new celebrity polar bear cub from Germany’s Nuremberg Zoo. Taken away from Mom because they were afraid she would hurt the cub. Here are some more pictures of the cub:

Sure reminds me of little, or I should say big now, Knut. What a cutie. I’ll be getting more pictures and news so keep tuned in.

Polar Bear Site Nominated For Award

Friday, January 18th, 2008

pb_aware_intro.jpgI’m thrilled to announce that Are You Polar Bear Aware?, my Squidoo site, has been nominated for Lens of the Year, 2007. The site’s purpose is to raise awareness and money to save polar bears. The income from the site goes to the National Wildlife Federation to save polar bears.

A total of 11 sites on Squidoo — which has over 300,000 sites, called lenses — have been nominated for the Lens of the Year contest. The other 10 sites are absolutely fabulous and I am honored to have been selected with them.

If you liked to see the contest site, click here. Check out the lenses there and vote for your favorite. Actually, you can vote for several.

Bear hugs, Frankie

Funny Yet Scary Picture Of Polar Bear Baby

Monday, January 14th, 2008

The Nuremberg Zoo’s polar bear Mom seemed to be a little confused from the video I put in my last blog entry (see Polar Bear Cub Taken From Mom). But the following photo definitely shows some problems. It’s kind of cute, kind of funny, and a bit scary, all at the same time.

Which end is up?

All in all, I think it’s good that the cub was taken away from her. Every time she drops that little baby in the video, I cringe.

Stay tuned, I’ll bring you more pictures and updates.

Polar Bear Cub Taken From Mom

Thursday, January 10th, 2008

A polar bear cub has been taken from its mother in Germany’s Nuremberg zoo. The zoo earlier had said that they would not do what the Berlin Zoo did with Knut — that is, they would not hand raise the cub, that they would let nature take it’s course.

Which is absurd of course, since the zoo is not a natural environment for polar bears. Besides, if the cub is in trouble, just what is a zoo’s job anyway? Isn’t it to save animals, especially endangered species?

Anyway, 2 polar bears, Vilma and Vera gave birth to cubs about a month ago. Vilma is thought to have eaten her two cubs as no one has seen them. Predators are known to eat sick offspring, so this is what is being considered.

Vera, the other mother, has been filmed carrying her cub around and trying to hide here in the compound. Below is a film that shows her actually dropping the month-old cub a couple of times. The zoo has announced that it would be bottle-feeding the newborn.

“The safety of the young animal is the first priority,” said deputy zoo director Helmut Maegdefrau on the decision to separate the cub from its mother. An abrupt about-face which may have been in response also to protests of animal groups when he announced the “let nature take it’s course” stance.

Here are a couple of pictures of Vera and cub I’m sure you’ll enjoy.
