If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

The Brno City Zoo has 2 baby polar bears and are they ever so cute. They are receiving thousands of visitors every day. Below are a couple of pictures of them. One with Mom Cora. The zoo is guessing that one cub is female and one is male.

Two cubs means 2 times the cuteness of Knut! Stay tuned. I’ll keep you informed about these 2 cubs.

Polar Bears - Top 3 New Stories This Week

Sunday, March 23rd, 2008

Here are the top 3 news stories this past week:

Knut’s zoo embroiled in animal slaughter scandal
The Berlin Zoo director who helped turn Germany’s rejected polar bear, Knut, into an international celebrity has been put under pressure to resign amid allegations that he had bred and sold animals for slaughter. Bernhard Blaszkiewitz, the director of two of Berlin’s prestigious zoos, was accused by a Green Party politician and animal rights experts of selling a pygmy hippopotamus and a family of Asiatic black bears for slaughter in two separate deals conducted in the early 1990s.

Boxer Replies to Kempthorne’s Failure to Confirm Appearance Before Polar Bear Committee
U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA), Chairman of the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works, today released the following letter in response to Secretary of Interior Dirk Kempthorne’s failure to confirm his appearance at an April hearing regarding the polar bear listing under the Endangered Species Act.
Complete text of Senator Boxer’s letter follows:

Nuremberg’s zoo readies for mass interest in polar bear cub Flocke’s debut
BERLIN: The Nuremberg Zoo is preparing for an influx of ursine enthusiasts when polar bear cub Flocke makes her public debut next month. The fluffy white cub — now 3 months old — has become as famous in Germany as her hand-raised predecessor, Knut.

Churchill Seeks Replacement For Polar Bear Tourism

Friday, March 14th, 2008

The residents of Churchill, Manitoba, Canada — the Polar Bear Capital of the World — are thrilled to hear that the Russian government has proposed keeping the “Arctic bridge” between North America and Eurasia open. If this happens, Churchill’s port could operate year round — a replacement for the tourism that is currently Churchill’s main industry.

People flock to Churchill to watch polar bears who congregate waiting for the Hudson Bay to ice over. Churchill is also where many female polar bears (sows) dig their maternity dens and emerge in early Spring with cubs.

The following article is worth the read. It starts with a polar bear sighting which is fun to read and continues with details of what’s happening in the Churchill area and about the industries — including diamond mining and oil production — and the changes needed for the people of the area to survive and replace the tourism industry.
