Gentle Sloth Bear Photo

Friday, February 20th, 2009

Here’s a wonderful photo of a rescued sloth bear at Wildlife SOS touching the hands of a visitor. You can see how gentle these tortured bears can be.

I had to share this great photo of 2 brown bear cubs working together for a single goal. Now, try to tell me bears aren’t intelligent!

Ice Bears of the Beaufort Sea

Tuesday, February 10th, 2009

filmaker Arthur Smith spent the past 5 years filming polar bears in the Beaufort Sea. His new documentary film, Ice Bears of the Beaufort Sea, is 50 minutes long and has no narration. Smith wants the bears to tell their own story.

What story is that? That they (polar bears) may be able to survive climate change but only if their habitat/environment is left untouched. The state of Alaska started selling oil and natural gas leases off the coast of the Beaufort Sea in October, 2008.

Polar Bear – What big teeth you have!

Wednesday, February 4th, 2009

Polar bears have some pretty big teeth, but what do you do when they need to be worked on? Well, the Marilyn Zoo in Baltimore found out. It seems that Anoki, the zoo’s 11-year-old female polar bear, needed a root canal. Yep, a root canal.

Well, they had to put Znoki to sleep for the surgery, and she slept the whole time — good thing. I can’t imagine what it would have been like if she had woken during the surgery! Yikes! Anyway, below is a photo and the video.

If you can not see the video because you receive this blog via email, just click on for the full story and the video.

You might wonder why they did the surgery. It turns out the number one reason that wild animals and animals in capivity die is due to oral disease. This surgery will allow Znoki to live longer. She is on pain meds for several days, antibiotics and soft foods for a couple of weeks but will recover fully and get back to her normal food fare soon.
