Ice Bears of the Beaufort

Friday, May 29th, 2009

In the Alaskan film, Ice Bears of the Beaufort, they say that the “polar bears greatest threat is their immediate loss of sanctuary to oil development”. The film is a non-narrated view of polar bears in the Beaufort Sea area and is breath-taking in it’s beauty as it captures these wonderful animals on their turf.

Polar Bears in Earth Day Movie

Thursday, May 28th, 2009

Disney released on Earth Day, March 22, a new movie which follows the lives of three animals for a year: polar bears, whales, and elephants.

The photography is stunning! Check theaters in your area for dates and times. And be sure to let me know what you think of it. Thanks!

Tiny sloth bear cub rescued from poachers

Tuesday, May 26th, 2009

I had to post the photo below of the sloth bear cub saved by Wildlife SOS. Click on the photo to see the photo larger and more photos.

This little bear will NOT become a dancing bear. After rehabilitation, the cub will probably be able to be released into the wild. The dancing bears that are saved aren’t able to do that because their claws and their teeth have been broken out by the Kalandar bear trainers and their years of abuse make them unable to survive in the wild.

Thank you Kartick and Geeta and the others working to at Wildlife SOS for all you do for these wonderful bears. We need more folks like you in the world.

Polar bear Knut in heated custody battle

Sunday, May 24th, 2009

Knut is now the center of a heated custody battle. It seems the Neumunster Zoo loaned Lars, Knut’s father to the Berlin Zoo in 1999. Neumunster says that the deal included them owning Lar’s first offspring (Knut).

The Berlin Zoo, where Knut was born and raised, claims otherwise. Knut together with another cub were born to Tosca, the female bear in 2006. Tosca abandoned them and the other cub died. Knut was then raised by Thomas Doerflein, the zookeeper.

(Click the photo above to get more details.)

The rest is history – Knut made worldwide headlines; raised awareness about global warming and the plight of polar bears; and raised an incredible amount of money for the zoo. He is estimated to be worth US$14 million!

It’s a tough one to be sure. I don’t think I’d want to be the one to make the decision. They can’t know which cub was born first. What do you think? How much should the Neumunster Zoo get? I’ll keep you posted about the settlement.
