China moves pandas after earthquake

Friday, May 22nd, 2009

China has moved the last batch of pandas still living in the Wolong preserve which was badly damaged in last year’s devastating earthquake to a nearby facility. The six pandas were moved from the Wolong Panda Breeding Center, near Sichuan’s capital of Chengdu, to another breeding facility in the same province.

Most of the 63 pandas living there have since been relocated to zoos around the country. The Wolong preserve had been the heart of China’s effort to use captive breeding and artificial insemination to save giant pandas. For more on the story, click Last pandas

Saving the Dancing Bears of India

Tuesday, May 19th, 2009

Kalandars, a tribal population in India, captures Sloth bear cubs from the wild, killing the mother when she tries to protect her offspring. The cubs undergo a painful process of training and growing up to be dancers, or Dancing Bears of India. These tribes have known this process for centuries. Their ancestors danced bears in the royal courts of Indian kings.

A few years ago, the bears were seen dancing to entertain tourists in several parts of India. Wildlife SOS and the Government of India together are putting an end to the dance of pain and disrespect.

To date, Wildlife SOS has rescued 521 dancing bears. They operate four rescue centers in Agra, Bangalore, Bhopal and Purulia. All the centers are run in collaboration with the respective State Forest Departments.

Wilbaer the polar bear is growing up!

Friday, May 15th, 2009

Wilbaer the polar bear is shown below in the new outdoor enclosure of the Orsa Gronklitt zoo in Orsa, Sweden which opened Monday, May 18, 2009. The park is shared with another bear name Ewa from Rotterdam, Netherlands. It looks like a great place to romp and play.

The hope is that these 2 polar bears will breed and produce an offspring or two. Can you say, KNUT? lol
