500th Dancing Bear of India Rescued
On December 18, 2008, almost 6 years to the date, Wildlife S.O.S. rescued the 500th sloth bear. Chitra, the 12 year old sloth bear, was relinquished to Wildlife SOS in Bangalore on Friday by her Kalandar master. After spending several painful years performing for tourists and rural audiences, Chitra will now spend the remainder of her retired life at the forested Bannerghatta Bear Rescue Center, where she will be well cared for, surrounded by friends, and well loved. Her Kalandar master will receive a rehabilitation package to encourage him to start a new business to support his family.

Kartick Satyanarayan said, “Although we are proud of the life we can offer Chitra, and all of our rescued bears, in the sanctuary, we would prefer that there would not be a need for these sanctuaries and the bears could live unharmed in the wild.”
Kartick and co-founder, Geeta Seshamani’s vision is to end the cruel Dancing Bear tradition in India by 2010. for more information on Wildlife S.O.S. effort click India Bear Rescue project.
