Alaska continues to fight polar bear protections

November 19th, 2009 by frankie

Alaska Gov. Sean Parnell continues the fight against the federal government’s expanded protection for polar bears like his predecessor, Sarah Palin. Saying it will get in the way of the state’s continued prosperity, the governor claims groups are using the protections as “a land use planning tool” instead of species protection.

Attorney, Kassie Siegel, of Center for Biological Diversity and the author of the original listing petition, expects the Alaska lawsuit to fail. She says that state officials selectively chose their facts and ignored others.

There is still argument over the population of polar bears. The numbers being up from the 1950’s when the hunting of the bears brought their numbers to an all time low. But with the warming of the sea ice polar bears and other arctic animals are in jeopardy. For more information on this topic, click Alaska polar politics.
