Board’s Stalling May Kill Maggie

The Alaska Zoo board is dragging their feet again getting Maggie, the lone African elephant, to a facility better suited to elephants — hopefully an elephant sanctuary. On June 8th, I reported that the zoo directors, after years of controversy and mounting pressure, finally made the decision to move Maggie to a facility in one of the Lower 48 states. But to date, they have still not decided where or when she will be moved and many do not believe that she will make it through another winter in Alaska.

Maggie, who lives most of the year inside a concrete floored “cell” due to the weather in Alaska, continues to show signs of stress. Below are 2 pictures taken in an 16 day period in June (I couldn’t bring myself to print them all.) If you like to see the rest of the pictures, click on Friends of Maggie http://www.friendsofmaggie.net/comparisons.html).

Please, take a moment to send the zoo directors an email asking, pleading, begging, demanding — whichever you feel is most appropriate — to have Maggie moved into her new home ASAP, winter because quite frankly many animal experts do not believe she will survive another winter in Alaska. Your comments which can be sent to directors@alaskazoo.org.

Please call, write or fax the zoo and urge them to move Maggie to a Sanctuary where she can live out her life in peace with others of her kind ASAP. She’s been alone too long — 10 years!
