The Berlin Zoo is thrilled with Knut, the first polar bear to be born in the zoo in over 30 years. After being rejected by his mother, Knut spent his first 44 days in an incubator. He’s now being raised on a bottle.Born on Dec. 5, 2006, the tiny bear cub was rejected by his mother, the 20-year-old polar bear Tosca. His twin brother died four days after the birth. Thanks to the loving care of the zoo staff, Knut has prospered and now has “a good chance of survival,” according to his keeper Thomas Dörflein. Dörflein has provided round-the-clock care to the cub, and feeds Knut milk with a bottle six times a day, which he’s managed by sleeping in the zoo since the birth.

Knut weighed only 1.8 pounds (810 grams) when he was born. He now weighs 8.6 pounds (3.9 kilograms). He still has a long way to go though — adult male polar bears can weigh up to 1760 pounds (800 kilograms).

Knut is being kept out of the public eye at the moment. A zoo spokeswoman said the stress of being shown to the public would be too much for the little polar bear.
