Ice Bears of the Beaufort

I just saw a sneak preview of the incredible film Ice Bears of the Beaufort. It took director Arthur C. Smith 5 years to make the film which showcases critical polar bear habitat which is endangered by efforts to drill for oil.

The documentary chronicles polar bear activity and their year-round use of the coastal and offshore areas of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and the adjacent Beaufort Sea. The Beaufort Sea is in the remote northern part of Alaska and is covered most of the year by ice and home to about 2,500 polar bears.

I was enthralled by the film with the shots of polar bears in their natural habitat and found myself chuckling at polar bears playing. I liked too that the film had a musical score but no voice-over taking attention away from the bears. Instead every so often a black screen would display some commentary. I loved it and if you love polar bears I’m sure you will too.

The film is showing at the Artivist Film Festival in Hollywood at 7:30pm on December 2nd. Let me know if you get a chance to see it.

Bear hugs, Frankie
