Rush Limbaugh Bear-ly Coherent

On his March 8th radio talk show, Rush Limbaugh, went on a tear about how we [the people] are being lied to about global warming and the plight of polar bears. And his proof? Well, he couldn’t find any actual hard facts so instead he used the above picture! Really. Here’s what he said…

“Remember the picture of the two polar bears on the ice floe?” he asked his audience. “That picture was taken in 2004, but the Drive-Bys and the environmentalist wackos and the global warming crowd put that picture out and made it appear that this is a vanishing glacier, and reported that the polar bears are ’stranded’? This is also in Gore’s movie, and this is why little kids all over the world are crying because they think the polar bears are being killed by global warming, when in fact the truth is the original caption of the picture was that this is an ice floe, sort of a sculpture made by waves. It’s naturally occurring. It is not a broken off glacier. It’s not drifting off and the polar bears are not stranded.”

“…It was so utterly false and propaganda..” he ranted some more about the picture. You have to give him his due: when he sinks his teeth into something, he’s like a mad dog and refuses to let go.

Well he is right about one thing, the picture is of some polar bears on an ice floe taken in 2004. No one said it wasn’t. It was a picture used for “dramatic effect” — to make a point, much as many pictures are used. For example, I used the following picture of a polar bear, who appears to be drowning …

when I posted an article that reads “It’s all fun and games until a Polar Bear drowns,” No, this polar bear is not drowning. I simply used the picture for “dramatic effect” — to capture your imagination.

I think Rush knows the old saying, “if you can’t dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with bullshit.” Rush, get over it. It’s just a picture. And, listen up:

Here are just a few scientific findings proving that sea ice is shrinking and the negative effects on polar bears:

* Current sea ice in the Arctic is declining at a rate of more than 23,000 square miles per year.* Peter Wadhams, professor of ocean physics at Cambridge, has made frequent observations of Arctic sea ice from submarines, recording more than a 40 percent loss in ice thickness in the past 25 years.

* Alaska Science Center discovered cub survival is down from about 65 percent survival measured in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

*The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the leading voice among climate scientists worldwide, reported there is more than a 90% chance that global warming is being caused by manmade burning of fossil fuels.

Even the Bush administration has given the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service the go-ahead to consider listing the polar bear as threatened and they have not done that with any other animal during their administration.

Really, Rush, get a grip. If you can’t find scientific facts, maybe you should find another subject to argue. Because on this one you come across as bear-ly coherent.
