U.S. House Fails To Protect Polar Bears From Trophy Hunters
The Inslee-LoBiondo amendment failed in the House of Representatives by a vote of 188-242. The amendment sought to halt funding for 1 year for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to issue permits for the importation of sport-hunted polar bear trophies.
The following cartoon by David Booth of Cabin Fever Art expresses my sentiments exactly!

My rep, Mike Thompson of California, voted against the amendment and has therefore lost the 2 votes in my household. My husband and I will not vote for anyone that condones the killing of any animal simply for “sport” and “bragging rights”. As I’ve stated before, man is the only species that kills for sport, then decorates his home with the remains.
If you are unhappy about the outcome of this bill, check https://community.hsus.org/ct/lpSQRs71RXhl/ to see how your representative voted. If your rep voted no, then please send a polite letter or email, or better yet, call them and explain your disappointment.
It’s not over. We will continue to fight this inhumane treatment of polar bears by continuing to fight to get the Polar Bear Protection Act passed, which will permanently ban polar bear trophy imports.
Wayne Pacelle of the Humane Society of the United States was actually on the floor of the house during the debate. His update of this and other animal issues are on his blog, A Humane Nation, at http://hsus.typepad.com/wayne/2007/06/major-progress-.html. Check it out. It is an excellent blog and I highly recommend getting on his mailing list to keep up on all the laws and petitions to do with animals.
You can take action now by signing the petition to help pass the Polar Bear Protection Act at https://community.hsus.org/campaign/FED_2007_polar_bear_trophy2. Please take 1 minute right now and sign this petition to help save polar bears from extinction. Thank you!
Bear hugs,
Frankie
