Maggie the elephant update

December 16th, 2008 by frankie

I received the following email from Patrick Lampi, the director of the Alaska Zoo. He fought for Maggie’s release to PAWS, the elephant sanctuary in California, for 5 years like many of the rest of us. Finally in November of 2007, the Board of Directors allowed Maggie to go to her forever home. A home with other elephants.

Many of you wrote emails and letters to the board of Directors and others in support of Patrick and PAWS to make it happen. Here’s the letter:

“Maggie Update 12/16/08

On November 2nd of 2007 Maggie the African Elephant was moved to the PAWS in California.

The Alaska Zoo made the right decision to move her. It was not easy to convince board members, that had strong emotional attachments to her, “ To Let her Go”.

It is now over one year later, she is doing wonderfully at her new home and I could not be more pleased. She has been completely accepted by the other African elephant at PAWS.

I am asking you to show support of the decision by making a small contribution to the Alaska Zoo. The Zoo has cared for hundreds of orphan and injured animals and provides Wildlife Conservation throughEducation.

Our revised Mission Statement is: To promote the conservation of Arctic, Sub-arctic and like climate species through education, research and community enrichment

If you are inclined to make a donation to the Alaska Zoo it may be sent to the address below. Please note on your contribution “in support of having moved Maggie”

Best Wishes,
Patrick S. Lampi”

Note their new mission. It shows that what we did to free Maggie will save other non-arctic and cold-climate animals from being placed at the Alaska Zoo. And, that’s a good thing.

If you can send a donation, no matter how small, to show your support of the freeing of Maggie, I believe it would make an impact on any future decisions the board makes. Make sure to note your donation as “in support of having moved Maggie”. Thank you!

Bear hugs, Frankie
